The Group have been studying chick survival at a number of sites on the Norfolk coast, the exact locations are deliberately not given for security reasons.

All have been colour ringed with 2 colours on the tibia of one leg and a yellow over metal ring on the tibia of the other leg.

If you see a colour ringed Avocet please send details of when and where you saw it to John Middleton (including a grid ref or co-ordinates if possible).   Full details of the life of an individual will be sent to you if the combination you saw matches one in the Group Database.E-Mail HERE

Map of Avocet recoveries and colour ring sightings.

Lots of sightings of our colour ringed birds have occurred, Many of them in the south-west on the Tamar Estuary where many Avocets are known to winter.

One has been seen in France and another in Holland.

Many of these sightings are of the same individual such as this one ringed on 05/08/1991. It was seen again at the following locations in England:

17/09/91 Halvergate, Norfolk

31/12/91 Tamar, Devon

21/03/92 Titchwell, Norfolk

19/04/92 Farlington, Hampshire

01/05/92 Stanpit, Dorset

26/06/92 Sidlesham, Sussex

31/07/92 Titchwell, Norfolk

07/08/92 Minsmere, Suffolk

06/08/94 Breydon, Norfolk

05/03/95 Titchwell, Norfolk

10/04/96 Holme, Norfolk

11/03/97 Titchwell, Norfolk

07/03/98 Titchwell, Norfolk

07/03/99 Titchwell, Norfolk

14/10/99 Middlebere, Dorset

Colour ring sightings provide some fascinating life histories of individual birds.
